John Colen Filbrandt, 59, of South Haven passed away Thursday, September 22 at home.He was born October 10, 1951 in South Haven, Michigan to Howard and Paula (Allers) Filbrandt. John graduated from South Haven High School in 1970. He married Christina Koestner on July 28, 1972. John was the plant manager for Consumers Concrete in South Haven. John was a member of St. Basil Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, South Haven’s Men’s Chorus and the Steelheaders. John was an original member of the South Haven’s Alumni Marching Band. John’s favorite activities include golf, fishing, bowling, morel mushroom hunting, horseshoes and spending time on his boat “Our Limit.” For many years, John also coached Little League baseball.He is preceded in death by his sister – Deb Richardson.He is survived by his wife – Chris Filbrandt of South Haven, Michigan. One daughter – Lilah (Peter) Ambrosi of Suwanee, Georgia. Four sons – John (Amy) Filbrandt, Jake (April) Filbrandt both of South Haven, Michigan, Joe Filbrandt of Stauanger, Norway and Jordan (Elise) Filbrandt of Key West, Florida. Michelle Helen Borden, 46, of Bangor, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2018 at her home. She was born September 15, 1971 to Dale and Mary (Burns) Clayton in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Michelle graduated with the Bangor High School Class of 1991. She later became a CNA and a licensed nail tech in the State of Michigan. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, enjoyed writing in her journal, and doodling. She is preceded in death by her mother – Mary Clayton and son – Shawn Borden. Michelle is survived by her daughter – Kayla Borden of Bangor, grandchildren – Kayden, Joseph, and Alyssa, siblings – Dale “DJ” (Christina) Clayton of Coloma, Charlotto (Cherrie) Kaiser, Charmin (Tooter) Wood, and Mary Anders, and former spouse – Russell “Chuck” Borden. Vincent Edward Schumacher, Captain USN (ret), 96, of South Haven died Sunday, September 18 at his home.He was born July 11, 1915 in Kankakee, Illinois to Charles and Ruth (Ives) Schumacher. Vincent graduated with his Bachelors Degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1938. Vincent married Mary Palmer on November 7, 1942 at Mare Island Naval Station, California. He served his country for 30 years and retired as Captain in the United States Navy. Captain Schumacher served as one of the original board members of the Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Schumacher, who died in 2001. His sister, Jeanne Crandall, also precedes him.He is survived by his three sons – Vincent P. Schumacher of Grand Rapids, MI, Charles A. Schumacher of Jamaica Plain, MA, and John R. Schumacher of Kensington, MD. One grandson – George Schumacher of Ada, MI also survives. Leonarda Bernice (Podgorny) Niles, 93, of Lawrence, passed away Monday, July 12, 2021 at American House in Holland, Michigan. She was born July 19, 1927 in Covert, Michigan to Frank and Bernice (Kmicek) Podgorny. Leonarda worked as the office manager for GTE Phone company for 30 years before her retirement. She married Richard Niles on October 12, 1946 and they shared 60 years of marriage before his passing. Leonarda loved to travel with Richard and they would regularly visit Florida, Arizona, and Hawaii. She enjoyed reading and golfing. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her children – Lucius and Lonny Niles, and her siblings – Chester, Sylvester, and Virginia. Leonarda is survived by her son – Larry (Stacy) Niles; daughters-in-law – Cindy and Glori Niles; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. Leonarda will be laid to rest at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Holland at 270 Hoover Boulevard, Holland, MI 49423 in Leonarda’s honor.

Carl R. Filbrandt, 79, passed away peacefully March 9, 2020 at his winter home in Sebring, Florida with his wife, Donna, of 52 years by his side. He was born July 31, 1940 to Carl and Ruth (Hinz) Filbrandt in South Haven. Carl was a lifelong South Haven resident and had been a seasonal resident in Sebring, Florida. Carl graduated from South Haven High School with the Class of 1959. He was a farmer his entire life, growing crops and raising animals. He loved farm life and continued to work around the farm his whole life. He was also a member of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades. Carl is survived by his loving wife – Donna Filbrandt of South Haven; children – Annette (Matthew) Ayotte of South Haven and Cari (Raymond) Copi of South Haven; five grandchildren; a special nephew – Gary Barner and a host of nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life and dinner will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, July 31, 2020 at the St. Paul Lutheran School Gym in South Haven, 718 Arbor Court, South Haven, Michigan 49090. The family will briefly share some memories at 6:00 PM followed by dinner. Michael Joseph Cullum, 38, of McDonald, MI in Bangor Township, passed away unexpectedly at his home on January 14, 2018. Mike was born in South Haven, MI on August 31, 1979 to Eddie and Debbie Swanner. Mike was an excellent mechanic and could fix anything no matter how long it took, because he never gave up. Some of his best times were working on their Saturn and his prized possession "Red", his Chevy truck. The look of pride on his face when those engines would fire up was priceless. Michael worked different jobs around the area including Wesco, Pizza Hut, and South Haven Finishing; where he met the love of his life, Missy. Mike enjoyed chilling with his friends at his home; many of whom he considered family. He was most at peace when he was driving "Red" with his girl, dog, and Mt. Dew by his side. They loved having a sunset dinner on their boat just floating on the lake. Mike was a hard worker, always making sure those around him were taken care of before himself. He would and has literally given the shirt off his back to someone in need. Michael was preceded in death by his father, Eddie Swanner of Mcdonald, MI. He is survived by his fiance, Melissa Watkins of Bangor, MI. His mother, Debbie Swanner, of Benton Harbor, MI. The only child he had, his loyal companion, T Bear Cullum; and special friends Stephanie Stainbrook and Dustin Carter and honorary nephew, D.J. “Flathead” Carter.
