The Monterey County District Attorney's Office has released preliminary details about an incident on Highway 101 on Monday that resulted in King City police shooting a suspect. Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni confirmed that King City police fired in retaliation after being shot at by an armed suspect. Two King City police officers fired at the suspect. One officer was identified as Sgt. The victims reported the incident 20 minutes later after returning home, described the Maza, provided the license plate number and said it was last seen going towards Highway 101. At around 7:15 p.m., Greenfield police spotted the Mazda going north on Highway 101 near Greenfield and pursued the suspect. Eventually, King City police joined the pursuit while the Mazda refused to stop, said Pacioni. Then Mazda later turned on its right turn signal and moved to the shoulder on Highway 101 near Soledad. Before coming to a complete stop, Pacioni said, that the driver came out of the passenger side of the Mazda and fired at a King City police car. He fired two rounds, and two King City officers returned fire, and one bullet hit the suspect. The shots were reported at 7:24 p.m., and all the shots were fired within five seconds, said Pacioni. Pacioni added that the suspect, 36-year-old Armando Garcia Rodriguez, was shot after turning to run northbound away from patrol cars and falling. Nobody else was injured during the shooting. A .40 caliber semi-automatic ghost gun was recovered at the scene, said Pacioni. The driver of the Mazda told law officials that she had no idea Rodriguez was going to rob someone, once he did, he threatened to shoot her and police if she stopped driving, said Pacioni. She was questioned by California Highway Patrol and KCP and was released. Rodriguez is recovering at Natividad Medical Center after he underwent surgery at 9 p.m. Monday. Pacioni said her office plans to file robbery and attempted murder of peace officer charges against Rodriguez after reviewing video of the incident.
